Introducing Our New Orchestra Director - Michael Samson

Michael Samson began his music career in 4th grade playing trumpet in school bands, and taking piano lessons soon after. He graduated from Ithaca College in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music in Composition with an emphasis in Piano Performance. While attending he was active in student-organized extracurricular musical activities, including putting together a concert of Disney music involving over 100 musicians comprising the orchestra, chorus, and vocal soloists, and founding the Ithaca College Gamer Symphony Orchestra, a still-active ensemble of approximately 60 members which arranges and performs music from video games. He was also a performer in the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps for four seasons, and with the Blue Devils International Corps in 2015. Michael has coached seven high school marching bands, Broken City Percussion, and the Blue Devils 'B' and Sacramento Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps, the latter of which he served as the Visual Caption Head. He was also an instrumental music teacher for the 6th graders of Thomas S. Hart Middle School and a General Music teacher for the 4th graders of Alisal Elementary School in Pleasanton during the 2016-17 school year.

Teaching in the Clovis West Area represents a new chapter in Michael's life, and he is beyond excited to work with his wonderful new students and enter this amazing and supportive community!

Handbook, Signature, Info, and Emergency Forms

Students were given Emergency Medical Forms, Information update forms, and Handbook Signature forms. The handbook is attached in this email for your reference. Please fill out and turn these forms as soon as possible to the band room.

AP Music Theory

An opportunity has presented itself, and we will again be able to offer AP Music Theory this year. Last year’s class was very successful in their efforts, and we hope to have the same success this year. If you or your student is interested in taking this high level course, please see Mr. Chesi.

Jazz Band

If you are interested in Jazz Band please join us this Tuesday - Thursday morning at 7am in the bandroom. Students can learn more about what the Jazz program will have to offer and how they can audition and participate. We will have two Jazz Bands this year: Jazz 1 will have set instrumentation and will play harder literature. Jazz 2 will be an open class for students that have less or no experience. We hope to see you there!

Marching Band Rehearsal

The first Marching Band rehearsal of the school year is this Tuesday! Attendance for rehearsal is always extremely important. Excused absence forms must be submitted at least one week prior to the anticipated absence (forms available in the bandroom and on our website). Last minute absences, such as family emergencies or student illness, should be excused by a parent or guardian emailing cloviswestmusic@gmail.com. Please view the attendance policy in the Instrumental Music Handbook if you have any questions (http://cloviswest.cwaim.org/forms/).

Marching Band - Please Order Your Shoes, Shirts, & Shoebags by Today

Please purchase these items on the Charms Online Store. Instructions for accessing Charms can be found by clicking here. Deadline to order is today, Monday, August 21. We will not make a second order. If you miss the deadline, used items will be loaned to you for the season.

MB - Elementary Blitz!

Marching Band students are going to visit all of the CW area elementary schools on Friday afternoon. Students need to wear their Clovis West Instrumental Music Shirts. If you/your student does not own a CW Instrumental Music Shirt, they will be available to borrow for free or purchase Friday for $10. We encourage students to purchase a shirt as we will use these many times through the year, and they are good for all four years of high school. The students will be excused immediately following 3rd-7th period (the absence is excused; students will be able to make up any missed work) and need to bring a sack lunch with them. This event is extremely important to our elementary instrumental music recruitment efforts.

MB - Pasta Palooza

Our third annual Pasta Palooza Dinner is Friday, September 1st.  This annual fall fundraiser is always a great success! We'll be serving pasta and meatballs, salad, bread and beverages and will be treated to a live performance by the award-winning Clovis West HS Marching Band!

Pasta Palooza will be held in the school’s Amphitheater in front of the cafeteria and will include a Dessert Dash and Raffle. Tickets are $15.00, and will be distributed this week to Marching Band students. Please come support the marching band and this fundraiser.

Parent Meeting

There will be a parent meeting next Monday, August 28. Please join us at 7pm in the CW Band Room for important information about marching band, this school year, etc. If you are unable to attend, a summary email will be sent after the event.
